Chapter Thirteen

“Are you sure this design will work?”

Haze looked up from her laptop and smiled at her new client. They were meeting in the hotel bar, where Sandy Fisher was staying purely for this meeting with Haze. Sandy owned an art gallery up north and had contacted Haze through a mutual acquaintance, one Haze had worked for before. Sandy was so impressed with Haze’s work he couldn’t wait to work with her. Haze was immensely proud she had managed to land such an affluent client. Hopefully, I’ll start making some real money.

“Definitely.” She turned the laptop so Sandy could see the template. “The thumbnails of several different pieces allow you to draw a wider audience. Much better than centering on single image that might not appeal to every buyer.”

“I just don’t want the page to be too muddled.”

“It won’t be. I’ll make them…” A familiar figure cut across Haze’s peripheral vision. She turned her head in time to see Nicole heading into the bar, her arm wrapped tightly around a short, blonde woman. They laughed together, and to Haze, they seemed more than friends. Please don’t tell me that’s Rhea.

“Make them what?” Sandy asked. “Ms. Evens?”

“Huh?” Haze looked back to him and blinked. “Sorry. Can you excuse me for a moment?” She didn’t give her client a chance to reply, as she stood and sprinted after the loved-up couple. “Nikki?”

Nikki swung around, her arm dropping from the woman’s waist, her eyes wide. “Haze! Hey.” She took a step away from the blonde. “What are you doing here?”

“Meeting a client.” She nodded her head to the table she shared with Sandy. “What about you?”

“Um, same.” She glanced at Rhea, who seemed confused by Nicole’s withdrawal. “We were just on our way to the conference room.”

“And who’s we?”

Nikki rubbed the back of her neck and blushed. “Uh, this is Rhea. She moved back down to my department.”

Haze folded her arms across her chest and glared at her. It was obvious Nikki was still cheating on Gabby. They were both dressed too casually to be going to a business meeting. They also didn’t carry any bags or folders. Haze couldn’t believe, after everything Nikki had promised, she could still carry on with Rhea. “Can I have a word?”

“Sure.” Nikki turned to Rhea. “You go ahead. I’ll be right there.”

Rhea shrugged and walked away toward the bar. Haze waited for her to get out of earshot. “What the hell, Nikki?”

“It’s not what it looks like.”

“Really? Because it kinda looks like you’re hooking up with her in a hotel.”

Nikki lifted her arms, palms forward in a placating manner. “I swear, Haze. I’m not. Please, you have to believe me. If Gabby finds out Rhea is back on my team, she’ll never come home.”

“I wish I could believe nothing is going on, but you were all over each other.”

“Gabby still isn’t taking my calls.” Nikki glanced down to the plush carpet. “What am I supposed to do?”

Is she serious? “I don’t know, how about not screwing
